Needs some visual distinction between the pieces and the board. I
like the suggestion of having the pieces change color in the
different sections. Maybe make the board a lighter version of that
color, so you can tell what is what, but can also distinguish the
pieces from the board. Or, you might want to give it a standard
checkered pattern; that can help people line things up, especially
along diagonals. Also, on the mediums and smalls, try drawing some
boxes indicating relative size, like you do with the Homeworlds
graphics.
