I am looking at implementing the game Branches, Twigs, and Thorns on SDG. 2-player seems trivial, as well as 4-players, but I wanted the opinion of people who have played. If I do a 4-player version, it needs to take into account the fact that players sometimes withdraw prematurely. In a 4-player game, does the game still work well if a player simply stops playing?

No, it doesn't work. All the strategy comes from the fact that the board fills up, and you need to give yourself enough room to grow your last few pieces. If one player withdraws and stops playing, then it's almost certain that nobody else will lose points for the rest of the game -- there will be too much room. So the game is effectively over anyway.
