The system doesn't have a notion of "this game has been abandoned in
mid-game"?

Well certainly that's an option. If someone resigns in a 4-player game
it can be scored as it stands or simply abandoned. That's certainly
possible. I've just never had a game like that before. Whichever of
those 2 options work best can be done.
