I played nethack once. There's also some ZZT games that seem inspired by roguelikes, but most of the turn-based ZZT games do so with a complex engine. I like the engine aspect of ZZT: You get a ton of objects working together to create a new aspect of gameplay. I like the inventory engine in Evil Sorcerer's Party, where you type "+i" into the cheat code box and it opens an inventory menu. So you can pick up items and use them just about anywhere, like in the first level where a coin is used first to unscrew a vent and later to use a payphone.
