I'd rather Apophis was up for contention. (Also, to all judges, I highly recommend trying the advanced rules - added after the last design competition - once you have a game or two of the basic rules in the books.)

Thanks!

Perhaps this will help...

ATTENTION ERIK DRESNER!!!   You have two games in contention for the "Best of 2009" fan award, Apophis and Spectrum.  Put your best foot forward... which of these games do you think has the better chance of winning?

ATTENTION ROBERT DUDLEY!!!   You have two games in contention for the "Best of 2009" fan award, Infiltrate and Stack Control.  Put your best foot forward... which of these games do you think has the better chance of winning?

ATTENTION ERIK OOSTERWAL!!!   You have FOUR games in contention for the "Best of 2009" fan award, Amoeba, Capture the Flag, Hexachess, and Quicksand.  Put your best foot forward... which of these games do you think has the best chance of winning?

While we're working on coming up with the finalists, here are some other
questions I want to get a reasonable consensus on:

1.  The name.  Suggested names include: "Apex Award", "Fan Award", "ICE
Award", "Pyramid Pinnacle Prize".

I like "ICE Award" because it's short, and stands for "Icehouse Community
Excellence Award"; but it has the disadvantage of referring to the term
"Icehouse", while there has been a general trend to call the games "pyramid
games" rather than "Icehouse games" -- Pink Treehouse doesn't use the term
"Icehouse" except in the credits.

I like "Apex Award" because it's short, and "apex" is the correct term for
the top of a pyramid, so the word has associations both with pyramids and
with excellence.

Being short is a virtue because the name needs to fit into the small space
in the Lab Report.  In fact, Kristin may have already chosen and ordered the
printing of the report; but in case she hasn't, what are your feelings?  I'd
be happy with "ICE" or "Apex", though I prefer the latter.

This is enough for this email.  I'll ask the other questions in another one.

Here are my other questions for the community about the awards:

2.  The number of awards.  I propose that we give out 3 awards -- 1st, 2nd
and 3rd places.  I would like to recognize the creativity I see shown in
last year's designs, and I want to encourage more creative designs in the
future.  I'm not saying that 3 awards (or even 1) is mandatory. There should
only be awards for games we'd think publishers would seriously consider.  We
won't let any finalist fall short of that criterion, and we could let voters
pick "No award" as an option for finalists they don't think worthy.  Still,
I think there are enough entries from last year good enough that we could
give 3 awards.  Your thoughts?

3.  The design of the awards.  My basic thought was to get some inexpensive
trophies from a local business that makes them, and place gold-painted
pyramids atop them.  Variations include:
A) 1st has a large, 2nd a medium, 3rd a small pyramid.
B) 1st has a tree, 2nd a truncated tree (medium on a large), 3rd a single
large pyramid.
C) 1st has a stack of 3 larges, 2nd a stack of 3 mediums, 3rd a stack of 3
small pyramids.

Comments, suggestions, other ideas?
