The coasters are nice bits fFor people *playing* games. but they may not be what is called fFor when *making* games. I would say a better thing to have your students get would be a chess board. Any old chess board will do. Emphasize that they shouldn't be limited to 8x8, and that they can use half a chess board if it makes a better game.
