I'd once again vote "sleeping."

Resting is a much vaguer term.  It can describe any number of inactive
states not all of which could lead one to believe that the resting
party is deceased.

I find it amusing when Google is used for statistical analysis.  If
"sleeping parrot" is selected then it will soon find itself connected
to Python by search engines.  This will remedy the current lack of
association.
