You might have heard of it under the phrase "incomplete dominance."

I see! I guess my eighth grade biology class didn't go far enough into genetics to cover more than two possibilities for a binary trait. The fact that TT would manifest differently than Tt is news to me!

We're actually talking about 3 kinds of tasting here:

Taster v. Non-taster (can you taste the bitter substance on the test strip?)  Designated genetically by Taster: Dominant, either TT or Tt and Non-taster: recessive tt.

Then there's Supertaster v. non-supertaster. There is some speculation/evidence that if you are TT, then you taste the bitterness more intensely than Tt people do... but both TT and Tt can taste the PTC strip, while tt people cannot.  This is where a supertaster might fall, genetically.

So, the continuum could be:  TT : Tt : tt     Supertaster : Taster : Non-taster.

Does that help or just make it muddier?

Maybe I'm misunderstanding, but supertasting is the recessive trait, right? And normal tasting is the dominant trait? If that's the case, than the correct notation is tt for a supertaster, and TT or Tt for normal taster. In the story of the adopted child, his parents would both have to be tt, while he could be TT or Tt. And Ryan, that would make your mother tt, you Tt, and dad either TT or Tt

I don't think left-handedness is a simple recessive trait: my parents
are both left-handed and I'm right-handed.
