I've heard they can be OK, but every dollar spent on one of them
is a dollar you can't spend on a good machine.

I say save the money and learn hand stitching. Needles can be had
for free (ask anybody who travels to snag you a sewing kit from
their next hotel room) and thread is cheap.

You'll have more money to spend on a quality machine later, and
you will appreciate it a LOT more. =^>
