I had attempted a mini game of volcano (as I have only 5 stashes, and thus will soon be getting the caps :{)} ). I didn't get far enough to really gain much understanding. I was playing with one of my sons who lost interest rather quickly. He recently asked me about the game again so we will soon be taking another run at it after I get the caps. so keep talking as I am doing some mental filing on the discussion. (or maybe I'm just mental).

As for my level of play I think in a lot of games (and volcano would very much be one at present) I start off trying to open up the board and experimenting with moves to see how things develop. I do this often even when I know better (ie I know it won't lead to victory) because its fun.

I once played a chess player who was much better than myself and held him off very late into the game. I told him before we played that I hadn't played in years (which was true) and that I wasn't very good (also true). I started the game however with a very aggressive series of opening moves. He was trying to figure out what I was 'Up to'. I just made those moves because they seemed like the thing to do at the time. after the opening I did develop a strategy but the opening was just a whim with nothing particular in mind.
