If you want to have another go at Volcano before your caps arrive, I'm sure you can find something to use as caps:

 - Something with a whole in it such as a metal washer or a lifesaver.
 - If you have another stash of pyramids that are the same color as one of your first five, just color some extras with paper, aluminum foil, masking tape, paint, etc.
 - Fold five smalls out of paper. There is the origami method, which uses larger square pieces of paper, and there's the cut out and fold up method. Depending on the paper you use one method or the other will produce pieces with wall thickness on par with the other pyramids.

If you're stuck with only five stashes (or five identical Treehouse sets), I think it is DEFINITELY better to find something to use as caps than it is to play four-color Volcano. "Regular" Volcano works out just right. It's better than mini-Volcano on a 4x4 board since a volcano on one edge of a 5x5 board can fully erupt toward the opposite edge. And it's better than a four color game on a 5x5 board, because the denser opening setup requires more thought during the first few moves.

If you MUST play with just four colors, I'd use a 5x5 board and leave the four corners and the center square empty.

I had attempted a mini game of volcano (as I have only 5 stashes, and thus will soon be getting the caps :{)} ). I didn't get far enough to really gain much understanding. I was playing with one of my sons who lost interest rather quickly. He recently asked me about the game again so we will soon be taking another run at it after I get the caps. so keep talking as I am doing some mental filing on the discussion. (or maybe I'm just mental).

As for my level of play I think in a lot of games (and volcano would very much be one at present) I start off trying to open up the board and experimenting with moves to see how things develop. I do this often even when I know better (ie I know it won't lead to victory) because its fun.

I once played a chess player who was much better than myself and held him off very late into the game. I told him before we played that I hadn't played in years (which was true) and that I wasn't very good (also true). I started the game however with a very aggressive series of opening moves. He was trying to figure out what I was 'Up to'. I just made those moves because they seemed like the thing to do at the time. after the opening I did develop a strategy but the opening was just a whim with nothing particular in mind.
