Well, my family is full of swift eaters. When my mother joined the family, she was only half finished with her meal when the rest of the family was done--now she's as quick as anyone. That is not to say that 
they don't converse over a meal--they do and it drives me crazy. While I understand the theory, I just don't see how talking at a meal, in practice, is necessarily related to eating more slowly.
