Most of the time when I play Zendo with new people, the theme gets lost after a round or two other than the words "master," "mondo," and "koan." For everything else we just say "it follows the rule if it doesn't have weird pieces" or stuff. So if you wanted to re-theme the game, you really just have to change those three terms and everything else should follow logically.
