Some good modern(ish) bands that fit would be:
-Phish (and their assembled solo projects)
-Assembly of Dust
-String Cheese Incident
-Lotus (they're a primarilly instrumental group, too, which might lend them to be "background" music)
-Polyphonic Spree (very hippy, to me)
I may remember more bands when I am conscious...
