As the token ex-pat Brit in the US, I have to say that *everyone*
knows it as the Dead Parrot sketch. If you want to put it from the
Shopkeeper's Point of View, then Resting, Kipping, Pining... all of
these seem appropriate.  (My vote's for Resting)

Sleeping is just right out.

1, 2, sleeping!
Resting, sir
Resting!
