It's a poor default, and should be entirely disregarded.  It breaks conversational order and makes discussions harder to follow. 

Including gmail which I use. It doesn't really matter if we top post or not you're an adult you can figure it out easily enough.


Not true.  Top-posting makes it arimpossible to tell what part of a message is being replied to.  I have been in many discussions where this actually causes major understanding problems.
