On the left hand, expanding it to five colors provides significantly more pieces for the students to use, without greatly increasing the complexity of the game. I do think adding colors makes the game more complex, which translates to "more difficult" for many players. In terms of rules, either the master's rule uses color or it does not. If the rule does not use color then adding more stashes to the pool adds more distracting colors.
