Why not just sell blanks?
I think that could lead to two problems:
1) Inconsistent special role rules from town to town, confusing
players
who are switching towns/forming new towns when they die (pretty
common,
at D*C).
2) Someone getting a special role might have to read the card
(again, as
it could be differently ruled from blank to blank) and thereby make it
more obvious to the other players that he or she received a special
role.
One thing you have to remember about AYAW is that it's a folk game;
it wasn't designed by Looney Labs, it's a game that has been around
for a while in several different forms (Mafia, AYAW, etc) that Looney
Labs just published one version of. There will always be variant
rules that Looney Labs can't cover, and they can't control how people
play the game.
That said, it would be nice if they released an expansion and some
blanks, to cover some of the variant rules and make it easier to
incorporate your own variants.
