I guess what i would be ok with is a forum that gives me the option of having the posts ( all of them not just threads I must go to the forum to choose) emailed to me. that way folks who find the delete button or the audible notification ( a feature I don't use for just this reason) too annoying can use the forums and folks who would rather have everything come to them can have that too.

My solution to the forum/email thing is handled by the ability to subscribe to threads i'm interested in. This then sends me an email any time a new post is made in a certain thread (or threads) on a forum and i can archive those notifications (with gmail tags) however i see fit to reference them later if i want.

my only concern with alll of this is that mailing list participation does not vanish. Yes I am one of those that GREATLY prefers the mail list. One place and only one place to get the goods. I have never cared for forums personally (excep for searching through after the discussion is over). One more place to go to see what's going on eventually means I won't go there. Since i always check my email I always know whats up. as for unwanted threads (like in my case con threads since I can't afford to go to one, yet) I just archive them without reading. (Love gmail.) And yes there are problems with mail lists but there are problems with forums too. and I think we all agree a wiki discussion page replaces neither of those two.
